Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kasese & Transfer to Rwenzori Mountains

Your adventure begins with a warm welcome in Kasese, the gateway town to the Rwenzori Mountains. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your expert guides and porters before heading to Rwenzori Mountains National Park. After a briefing at the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS) headquarters, you’ll check your gear and prepare for the journey ahead.

Day 2: Nyakalengija (1,650m) – Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m)

The trek starts at Nyakalengija, the park’s entrance, where you’ll register before setting off into the lush tropical rainforest. This day involves a gradual ascent through dense vegetation, home to primates like black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and several bird species.

After approximately 5-7 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m), perched on a ridge with stunning views of the valley below.

Day 3: Nyabitaba Hut – John Matte Hut (3,414m)

Today’s trek leads you deeper into the Bamboo Forest Zone before descending to the Kichuchu Bridge, crossing the Mubuku River. You’ll navigate steep ridges and rocky terrain, entering the Heather and Moorland Zone, characterized by giant lobelias and groundsels.

After 6-7 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at John Matte Hut (3,414m), where you’ll rest for the night with spectacular views of the Bujuku Valley.

Day 4: John Matte Hut – Bujuku Hut (3,962m)

The trail ascends through boggy terrain and alpine meadows, with striking views of the Mount Speke, Mount Stanley, and Mount Baker peaks. You’ll cross the Bigo Bog, using boardwalks to navigate the wetland, before arriving at Bujuku Hut (3,962m).

This location provides breathtaking scenery, with clear views of Margherita Peak (5,109m) on a good day. It’s also a prime spot for spotting Rwenzori turacos and sunbirds.

Day 5: Bujuku Hut – Elena Hut (4,541m) OR Kitandara Hut (4,023m)

Today, you’ll ascend towards Elena Hut (4,541m) for climbers attempting Margherita Peak or continue to Kitandara Hut (4,023m) if trekking without summiting.

For those climbing, the route becomes more technical and steep, requiring ropes and ice axes to traverse the Stanley Glacier. If heading to Kitandara, the trail winds past Scott Elliott Pass with beautiful views of the valley below.

Day 6: Summit Margherita Peak (5,109m) OR Descend to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,261m)

For those summiting, the climb starts at 2:00 AM, navigating icy sections with the help of crampons. After a challenging ascent, you’ll stand atop Margherita Peak (5,109m), the highest point in the Rwenzori Mountains and Africa’s third-highest peak.

After celebrating the achievement, you’ll descend to Kitandara Hut (4,023m) before proceeding to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,261m), passing stunning glacial lakes and rocky ridges.

Day 7: Descend to Nyakalengija & Return to Kasese
